Update on Sam Bankman-Fried – FTX CEO

Former FTX CEO Sam “SBF” Bankman-Fried has reportedly addressed questions from news outlets after being sentenced to 25 years in federal prison. Responding via email from the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, where he has been held since August 2023, Bankman-Fried expressed remorse, stating, “I never thought that what I was doing was illegal,” while acknowledging the weight of the consequences. Despite admitting to making “bad decisions,” Bankman-Fried avoided directly accepting responsibility for the collapse of the crypto exchange in November 2022, asserting that he did not act with malicious intent. He maintained his stance that the exchange could have survived and customers would have been repaid. The statement to ABC News is likely one of Bankman-Fried’s final public remarks before serving his sentence, as Judge Lewis Kaplan recommended that he serve the remainder of his time at a medium- or low-security prison in the San Francisco Bay Area.
